In September 2009, the Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation (MGIC) was formed as a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to help support the implementation of UMB international programs. UMB, through MGIC, currently has offices in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. MGIC’s administrative operations support the research and clinical programs of the School of Medicine, Institute of Human Virology (IHV) and Center for International Health, Education & Biosecurity (Ciheb), and other UMB entities.
Job Description
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation (MGIC) Baltimore, USA, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is implementing the Zambia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) project. This is a nationwide survey aimed to assess the prevalence and incidence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in the Zambian population, assessing the coverage and impact of HIV services at the population level, and characterizing HIV-related risk behaviors using a nationally representative sample of adults aged 15 years and older.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Regional Field Coordinator will work as part of the ZAMPHIA Field Implementation Team and provide leadership to field data collection teams and oversight. S/he will supervise field teams in the assigned region and ensure that the teams adhere to field procedures and meet their data collection targets. S/he will ensure;
Collection of accurate, high quality data
Integrity of the assessment and data,
Maintaining high levels of professionalism and confidentiality.
This work is field based and will require frequent and long hours including evenings. It will require working over weekends and public holidays. This position is 90% fieldwork oriented.
Note that applicants to this position must be able to speak and read fluently in Luvale, Lunda, and or Kaonde.
Primary Responsibilities;
Coordinating with other regional leads and coordinators including Regional Informational Technology Leads, Regional Community Mobilisation Lead, Regional Laboratory Leads and Regional Logisticians to ensure field teams have the requisite supplies and other support to achieve targets
Achieving targets in the designated zone on community mobilisation, household interviews and bio-marker processes, and satellite laboratory processes.
Motivating and encouraging survey teams, particularly Field Team Leads, and provide constructive feedback and oversight
Supervising field Teams Leaders
Tracking team progress and ensuring efficient completion of assigned tasks
Ensuring that field teams achieve their daily/weekly targets
Monitoring and ensuring that field teams spend adequate time in the field to achieve their targets
Troubleshooting any problems that the Field Teams may have including logistics, data collection equipment (tablets) etc.
Serving as a link between the Field Teams and the ZAMPHIA Secretariat
Ensuring all adverse events are properly documented and reported to the survey supervisors in a timely manner.
Ensuring the survey is completed within the established protocol and Standard operating procedures and within the stipulated ethical and regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Grade Twelve (12) Certificate with Five (5) O’ Levels
Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Diploma in Health-related program- Master is a Plus
EXPERIENCE
4 -5 Years working experience
Must have prior experience in large-scale, household-based surveys
Previous experience supervising and/ or managing data collection teams
Previous experience in HIV/AIDS programs/survey will be an added advantage
Demonstrated experience in the leadership, design, implementation, management and tracking/monitoring of HIV surveys
Experience working in a multi-sector environment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have sound knowledge of IT and be able to troubleshoot equipment while in the field
Knowledge of medical terminology (office training)Should have exceptional reading and comprehending skills and experience working with HIV/ AIDS projects
Knowledge of and practical experience in HIV community-based research and ethical requirements.
Must have a good disciplinary record and Knowledge of Zambia health sector
A sound understanding of HIV/AIDS surveys in resource constrained settings.
Should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Should be able to demonstrate the good analytical and researching ability
Should be strong organizers and good problem solvers with an ability to multitask.
Should be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Strong experience and understanding of integrated community health programs including HIV prevention, care and treatment services
Strong understanding of engaging with communities and partnership development
Experience in strategy development and planning
Extensive experience of implementing Community Based Programs
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills
Excellent analytic skills coupled with good report writing
Ability to multitask and work with multidisciplinary teams
Strong work ethic, high level of dedication
Able to maintain high levels of confidentiality
Ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision
Fluent in English written and verbal communication skills.
Competence in health community mobilization be fluent in Luvale and additionally speak Kaonde or Lunda or both is a must.
Demonstration of planning and organizing, interpersonal skills (active listening, empathy, social awareness, emotional awareness) with cultural sensitivity
Leadership skills with ability to direct, delegate, motivate and inspire other team members
Should be knowledgeable on the culture of the region
Flexible, willing to travel to any part of Zambia and work weekends and public holidays during the survey implementation period.
Must be ready to be available for the duration of survey period
Must be able to work during evenings and weekends
Must be willing to work in rural areas and camp
Self-starter, problem solver, innovative and an work with minimum supervision
